An acronym is a form of abbreviation that joins the initial letters or syllables of multiple words or elements into a composite. “MFA” is one such acronym for a distinguished academic title. Yet, it could also stand for “Mother of Ferocious Artworks” or a series of other expressions and names, either real or fictional.
The exhibition “My Favorite Acronym” exhibits the final works created by graduates departing the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in 2021 with the title “Master of Fine Arts”. In this master’s program in fine arts, with majors in sculpture, painting, ceramics, media art, drawing, printmaking, and interdisciplinary practice, not only is the competent use of various media techniques conveyed; above all, the graduate students are brought to develop their own artistic positions.
“My Favorite Acronym” indicates a poetic potential contained in the series of letters “MFA” and thus to one of the many spaces of possibility for creative, self-determined action. The graduates’ exhibition brings together 11 individual answers to the question: what does it mean to encounter images, materials, life, the world, and society with one’s own artistic practice?
